But, who is Jesus?
There are so many ways you could answer this question, but one way is to let Jesus answer it himself. In one of the accounts of his life Jesus makes this extraordinary claim, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’ (John 14:6) In other words Jesus is the way to God, he is our hope, he is the truth about God, he is the life that God gives. It is an uncompromising and exclusive claim, ‘no one comes to (God) the Father except through me.’
But is it true? History is littered with those who have made great claims but failed to deliver. We must therefore look at evidence, what he did and what he taught, to decide for ourselves what we make of him. At Christ Church we are convinced that the historical records we find in the Bible of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection are true. His life is like no other and the invitation to follow him is just as clear today as it was 2000 years ago.
As Jesus himself tells us, it will never be easy but it will always be worth it.
‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.’ (Mark 8:34-35)
