Grow Seminars:

I believe in the Holy Spirit

We worship the triune God, and depend on the Holy Spirit. Who is He, and what does He do? Our Grow Seminars this year, on Wednesday 10 June, will give us an opportunity learn more!

We’ll start promptly at 7.30pm (with church open for hot drinks from 7.15pm), going to one of four seminars. Each seminar will be a mix of up-front teaching and more interactive elements, and you can find out about each one below. After the seminars, we’ll then gather in our small groups to share what we’ve learned, and pray together, before finishing at 9pm.

How the Holy Spirit Makes You Holy: 3 Common Misconceptions about Sanctification

The Holy Spirit's work in our lives today can be hard to understand. How does his work to make us holy relate to our own efforts? What does it mean to 'keep in step with the Spirit' and put to death the deeds of our flesh - and what does that mean for how we view and treat our bodies? And how should we think about spiritual formation, or growth, and what is the place of Scripture in that process?

Anja Lijcklama à Nijeholt coordinates the Cambridge Christian Study Centre at the Round Church, and IFES Europe's postgraduate student ministry. She has an MA in Theology from Oak Hill Theological College.

Who is the Holy Spirit?

What do the great creeds, confessions, and statements of faith say about the person and work of the Holy Spirit? Come and find out more about the Nicene Creed, the 39 Articles, and the UCCF Statement of Faith, and what they have to say about who he is and what he does.

Breath, Wind, and Fire: The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament

The Holy Spirit did not arrive at Pentecost. He was at work throughout the Old Testament – from creation, through the story of Israel in which he empowered craftsmen and leaders, to the prophets’ promise of future day when the Spirit would fill all God’s people. This session explores what the Old Testament tells us about the Spirit, and why Pentecost is both a continuation of his work and a significant new development.

Tony works at Tyndale House, Cambridge, in a role that combines academic work in the Old Testament with communicating biblical scholarship in accessible way to the Church and the wider world.

The Holy Spirit in Luke-Acts

Together Luke and Acts tell the story of Jesus and the early church. It is a story whose central focus is on Jesus the Messiah and his death and resurrection, and the building of the church through the preaching of the gospel by Jesus’ apostles. And it is also a story of God’s activity in and through the Holy Spirit – from the conception of Jesus to his anointing for ministry through to the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. From the beginning to the end it is a story in which the Holy Spirit is a major character. In this session we will attempt to hear the overall story of the Holy Spirit in Luke-Acts.
